Johnson and Johnson's To Settle US and UK Bribery Charges

Johnson and Johnson, the New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant, finally submitted an offer of $78 million to settle bribery charges in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

The company that prides itself on its ethical behaviour was a subject of investigation since 2007 by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the United Kingdom Department of Justice on its business procurement practices.

On a report by The Sunday Times in 2007 J&J was quoted in its official statement of “subsidiaries outside the United States are believed to have made improper payments in connection with the sale of medical devices in two small-market countries”.

Beyond its official statements authorities revealed allegations that date bank in 1998 and involved kickbacks, sham contracts and bribes. This activities were observed among its officials and doctors in Iraq, Greece, Romania and Poland.

Rather than let investigations take its course J&J came forward in what was termed by other journalists as "pre-emptive" strike.

For its effort, U.S. authorities praised the cooperation by the company. Because of these measures it helped uncover impropriety in medical representations all over the world.

Owing to the cooperation by J&J state authorities reduced the criminal fine.

Other companies are on the watch-list of state authorities over bribery charges. This includes Eli Lilly & Co, and Baxter International.
